- World Water Day: How Can You Make a Difference?
This week the world celebrates World Water Day - and this year it's more important than ever. RECENT studies show that by 2025, half of the world’s population could face water scarcity. The theme for 2023 is “Valuing Water” - and this is about valuing water for all its uses, from the more obvious uses such as drinking and sanitation, to the less visible but equally important ways it supports human activities and ecosystems, such as farming. The campaign urges everyone to think about how water is used in their daily lives, and how they can help to conserve and protect it - because the truth is, we simply cannot live without it. Organized by UN-Water, the annual event aims to create awareness of the universal need for access to safe and clean water. According to the UN, 2 billion people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water - this not only affects their health, but also limits their opportunities for education and economic development. Shreya Ramachandran, one of the 2021 finalists for the Chegg.org Global Student Prize, was inspired to tackle the issue when she saw water shortages impact her family internationally. “I witnessed water scarcity first hand in two very different communities, in California, but also in India. And I saw striking parallels between them. I saw how people had to truck water in for basic needs such as drinking and bathing.” she told a panel at SxSW Edu last week. She was motivated to pursue solutions when she realized that many people were not aware of these issues and how they could impact them. “It was only after talking to people about the solutions that I'd been developing that I realized most people did not realize how big of a challenge water scarcity is. They didn't even know what grey water was.'' Her efforts culminated in the launch of her own non-profit called The Grey Water Project, which is dedicated to solving this issue by helping people incorporate grey water reuse systems into their homes. Shreya’s efforts are incredible - but you don't need to go that far to make a difference. Every little helps, and you can make a difference today by changing the way you use and manage water in your home or community. You have to start somewhere, so here are some simple changes you could implement today: Fix any leaks in your home, check the taps, toilets, and plumbing Make sure your dishwasher is full before running it Take quick showers - ideally 2 or 3 minutes long Switch off the tap while you brush your teeth Find out more about World Water Day here. - Unlocking the American Dream: Student Debt Solutions for Our Future Workforce
Executive Summary: The Far-Reaching Impact of Student Debt A huge increase in student debt over the past two decades is affecting and disrupting American lives both financially and psychologically. Some 43 million Americans owed $1.4 trillion in student debt at the end of 2018, an average of $33,500 per borrower. That was more than all other non-mortgage forms of consumer credit in the U.S. Individuals must pay these crippling sums back in post-tax dollars when they can least afford it, when they are trying to get their careers and their adult lives off the ground. What to do about this growing pile of debt? Economists and media pundits tend to undersell the impact on a cross-section of Americans. Politicians routinely offer blanket statements and silver-bullet solutions. But these initiatives rarely take into account the real-world impact of student debt on individuals and their families. They barely scratch the surface of the problem. Moreover, policy discussions fail to fully leverage the role and responsibility of other stakeholders, especially employers heavily reliant on the post-secondary education system for a diverse, educated, and well-trained workforce. - Introducing Chegg.org
We stand for students. At Chegg, we are always searching for innovative ways to serve students. Our economy is constantly changing, and soaring prices for everyday items continue to burden individuals seeking an education for themselves or their families, causing more and more students to graduate with debt. As students, families, educators, business leaders, and politicians navigate this ever-changing landscape, we’ve stepped up and created a new avenue for those passionate about supporting students of all backgrounds. No one who wants to better themselves should have additional hurdles in an uphill battle to successfully get where they belong, so we are creating a new table for anyone to sit at who wants to see students succeed. Today, we are thrilled to announce the launch of Chegg.org, the new not-for-profit arm of Chegg, which will serve as an impact, advocacy, and research organization addressing the issues facing the modern student. Chegg.org is designed to be a microphone for students, presenting research and data about what issues they are navigating and policy suggestions for how we, as a society, can make things better. We also have the Chegg.org Impact Fund through the Tides Foundation, which supports nonprofits who are building new solutions for students, and an advisory board of industry leaders who want to change the outlook for students with us. We will also be building scalable programs that other organizations can be a part of, so that anyone can join us in these efforts. As our company continues to do our best to serve students, we are building Chegg.org to advocate on their behalf. Check out our second State of the Student report, as well as a call to action for employers to help with student debt, and stay tuned as we announce new initiatives this fall.
